Position: Senior Statistical Data Analyst

Organization: Ethiopians for Quantitative Integrity(EQI)

Duty Station: The applicant can choose his/her duty station. The only requirement is that the country of choice ought to have an internet penetration rate of 0.5% or below

Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will be linked to the data analysis unit of EQI and will work with economists with strong quantitative background . Initially, S/he is expected to work with economists to find answers for the following questions.

-According to the data by Ethiopia’s Central Statistical Authority, increase in average wheat yield in the last seven years has surpassed the highest recorded average increase in the world, making Ethiopia, as one scholar said, “one of the fastest Green Revolution countries in history.” While in all Green Revolution countries such great increases in yield are attributed to technological and input use, Ethiopia’s fertilizer and improved seed use, irrigation area, and extension package have only increased modestly. How can earthly Ethiopians square the input data with the yield data? What magic formula has Ethiopia discovered in the past few years to increase yield dramatically by increasing input very modestly?

-Why does Ethiopia’s MDG indicators, unlike the same indicators for other countries, show some dramatic discrepancies across different releases? And why is it that in nearly all cases each subsequent release shows better performance for the same indicator for the same period than the previous release?

-According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopia’s forest cover has tripled since 2000 from 3% to 9%. But a respected environmental researcher claims that deforestation is still greater than afforestation in Ethiopia. How is it possible for a forest cover to triple if deforestation is greater than afforestation?

Required Qualification: PhD in statistics with a strong economics background and a good knowledge of Soviet history
