እ.ኤ.አ በ1925 ጆን ስኮፐስ ተብሎ የሚጠራ የሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት ቤት መምህር በቴኔሲ ግዛት ድንጋጌን በመጣስ በአንድ የሕዝብ ትምህርት ቤት ውስጥ ስለሰው ልጆች ዘገምተኛ ለውጥ\/human evolution ሲያስተምር ተገኝቶ እንደወንጀለኛ ተቆጥሮ ለፍርድ ቤት ቀርቦ ነበር። የስኮፐስ የፍርድ ሂደት ጉዳይ ልጆቻቸው በዘመናዊ ትምህርት እንዲታነጹ በማይፈልጉ ምንም በማያውቁ ደንቆሮዎች እና ሌሎች ደግሞ ዘመናዊውን የአሜሪካ የሳይንስ ትምህርት እንዲገበዩላቸው በሚፈልጉ ሰዎች መካከል የሚደረግ ትግል ስለነበር የፍርድ ሂደቱ በመላው ዩኤስ አሜሪካ ልዩ ትኩረት ተሰጥቶት ሲታይ ነበር።<\/p>\n
